The Importance of God’s Word.

All Scripture is inspired by God and beneficial for teaching, for rebuke, for correction, for training in righteousness; so that the man or woman of God may be fully capable, equipped for every good work.” 2 Timothy 3:16-17.

The importance of the Bible is impossible to overstate. Essentially, it is God’s instruction on how we are to live our lives in a way pleasing to Him.Both the Old and New Testament give us the opportunity to see and know God. They  reveal all we need to know about Him, both His character and nature. We see His sovereignty and power while He is revealing His reason for creating all there is; the universe and everything in it which includes all living creatures. We read of God’s dealings with mankind: His goodness and love, along with His holiness and justice, mercy and compassion.

The Bible reveals God’s desire from the beginning to have a people who are His own.

Moreover, I will make My dwelling among you, and My soul will not reject you. I will also walk among you and be your God, and you shall be My people. I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt so that you would not be their slaves, and I broke your yoke and made you walk erect.” Leviticus 26: 11-13.

We also see the perfect relationship mankind has with God, which was broken by disobedience in sin. However, because of the sacrifice of God’s son, Jesus Christ, we can be forgiven. We see in His word that God desires to redeem and  restore us to a right relationship with Himself.

Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we also have obtained our introduction by faith into this grace in which we stand; and we celebrate in hope of the glory of God. And not only this, but we also celebrate in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance; and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope; and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us. For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. For one will hardly die for a righteous person; though perhaps for the good person someone would even dare to die. But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from the wrath of God through Him. or if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life. And not only this, but we also celebrate in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation.” Romans 5:1-11.

Then we read what follows,

So then, as through one offense the result was condemnation to all mankind, so also through one act of righteousness the result was justification of life to all mankind. For as through the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of the One the many will be made righteous.” Romans 5:18-19.

By reading God’s Word, we can understand the purpose of our lives, as well as God’s plans for mankind from the beginning of time throughout all eternity.

But you are A CHOSEN PEOPLE, A royal PRIESTHOOD, A HOLY NATION, A PEOPLE FOR GOD’S OWN POSSESSION, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; for you once were NOT A PEOPLE, but now you are THE PEOPLE OF GOD; you had NOT RECEIVED MERCY, but now you have RECEIVED MERCY.” 1 Peter 2:9-10.

For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.” Ephesians 2:10.

We also see that the scriptures are  a life-giving book.

For the word of God is living and active, and sharper than any two-edged sword, even penetrating as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” Hebrews 4:12.

And because He desired to redeem us, God gave His Word the power to save us.

You, however, continue in the things you have learned and become convinced of, knowing from whom you have learned them, and that from childhood you have known the sacred writings which are able to give you the wisdom that leads to salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is inspired by God and beneficial for teaching, for rebuke, for correction, for training in righteousness; so that the man or woman of God may be fully capable, equipped for every good work.” 2 Timothy 3:14-17.

The importance of God’s word is that it shows us God’s will. By obeying what the Lord says in the scriptures, we can keep ourselves pure.

How can a young man keep his way pure? By keeping it according to Your word. With all my heart I have sought You; Do not let me wander from Your commandments. I have treasured Your word in my heart, So that I may not sin against You.” Psalm 119:9-11.

Meditating on the teachings of Scripture will cause us to prosper spiritually and bring blessings and true success in life.

This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it; for then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will achieve success.” Joshua 1:8.

But one who has looked intently at the perfect law, the law of freedom, and has continued in it, not having become a forgetful hearer but an active doer, this person will be blessed in what he does.” James 1:25.

And the scriptures contain essential wisdom and guidance for making our way through life:

“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” Psalm 119:105.

Jesus taught His disciples, and ultimately us to depend on God’s Word for our “daily bread.” We cannot underestimate the importance of consuming it regularly, for it is the fuel of our spiritual lives.

And He humbled you and let you go hungry and fed you with the manna which you did not know, nor did your fathers know, in order to make you understand that man shall not live on bread alone, but man shall live on everything that comes out of the mouth of the LORD.” Deuteronomy 8:3.

Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. And after He had fasted for forty days and forty nights, He then became hungry. And the tempter came and said to Him, ‘If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.’ But He answered and said, It is written: ‘MAN SHALL NOT LIVE ON BREAD ALONE, BUT ON EVERY WORD THAT COMES OUT OF THE MOUTH OF GOD.’” Matthew 4:1-4.

All Scripture is inspired by God and beneficial for teaching, for rebuke, for correction, for training in righteousness; so that the man or woman of God may be fully capable, equipped for every good work.” 2 Timothy 3:16-17.

For the word of God is living and active, and sharper than any two-edged sword, even penetrating as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” Hebrews 4:12.

And we can wield it as our greatest offensive weapon against our adversary, the devil, and the powers of darkness.

And take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.” Ephesians 6:17.

The Word of God is eternal:

The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God endures forever” Isaiah 6:12.

And the Word of Truth is eternal, it does not change,

“And take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.” Ephesians 6:17.

The sum of Your word is truth, And every one of Your righteous judgments is everlasting.” Psalm 119:160.

How can we doubt the unending importance of the Scriptures when we read,

Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away” Matthew 24:35.

And as our focus verse states,

All Scripture is inspired by God and beneficial for teaching, for rebuke, for correction, for training in righteousness; so that the man or woman of God may be fully capable, equipped for every good work.” 2 Timothy 3:16-17,

To close, the Word of God is more important than any other book that has been written. I suggest we all read though His word each year, starting with Genesis 1, all the way through Revelation 22. I have already read through it once this year and will be starting again this week. You will find it a truly important time. And I know that God will open your heart to new thoughts you did not see before. It will be a wonderful blessing in your life.
